Question: Feasibility of Hot‑Path Runtime Profiling in Box64 Dynarec?
Hi @ptitSeb and the Box64 team—thanks for all the fantastic work on this project!

I’ve been experimenting with Box64 for benchmarks and wanted to check whether a hot‑path runtime‑profiling mechanism is on your roadmap (or, if not, why it might not fit)?

I read the source code and found out Box64’s dynarec currently relies on static “bigblock” extending mechanism to create a block as big as possible, which could improve Box64's performance on certain workloads. But this strategy can’t always zero in on the hottest execution paths, so some performance potential may be left untapped.

So I wonder if a simple runtime profiling mechanism will be considered? Using counters to record each generated block's execution frequency, and when that counter exceeds a threshold (like 50, which in other DBI/DBO tools like DynamoRIO is treated as a good choice), the dynarec could treat the cross-block sequence as a hot path and combine these blocks into a bigblock. And let the counter decay over time, so new hot paths can surface.

I’m curious whether you’ve explored a runtime‑profiling scheme for Box64, and—if it hasn’t been pursued—would you mind sharing what factors led to that decision? Thanks very much!

Request (improvement) Box64
### Tools and Improvements for Box64

#### **1. Performance Optimization**
- **Dynamic JIT Optimization:** Implement caching for frequently used code segments to reduce recompilation time. For example, DynaRec improves x86_64 code execution speed by 5–10× in tests on Raspberry Pi 400.
- **Multithreaded Translation:** Leverage all ARM/RISC-V cores for parallel instruction processing. Critical for demanding games (e.g., *The Witcher 3*) on devices like the Sophgo 64-core RISC-V.
- **Vulkan/DXVK Integration:** Enhance Vulkan driver support for devices such as Raspberry Pi 4/5, where current DXVK implementations are unstable due to missing extensions.

#### **2. Compatibility Expansion**
- **Automatic Wine Configuration:** Tools to download and configure Wine (e.g., via symlinks and prebuilt PlayOnLinux versions), as documented for RISC-V and Nintendo Switch.
- **Docker Container Support:** Run x86_64 containers on ARM servers via Podman/Docker integration, simplifying deployment of ML tools like TensorFlow.
- **System Proxy Libraries:** Automatically replace x86_64 libraries with native equivalents (e.g., OpenAL, SDL2). Partially implemented but currently requires manual tweaks.

#### **3. Usability**
- **Graphical Interface (GUI):** Integrate with managers like **Pi-Apps** for Nintendo Switch, enabling two-click Box64 installation. A similar tool for Linux desktops would streamline emulation setup.
- **Dependency Automation:** Scripts to install missing libraries (e.g., `winetricks` for DXVK/VKD3D). For example, RISC-V Wine currently requires manual downloads of `wine-10.0-amd64-wow64.tar.xz`.
- **Preconfigured Game Profiles:** Settings templates for popular games (*Half-Life 2*, *Cuphead*), including resolution and graphics library versions.

#### **4. Security and Stability**
- **Sandbox Mode:** Isolate emulated apps to prevent access to system files, similar to Winlator on Android.
- **Enhanced Logging:** Detailed tracing of syscalls and translation errors. Current Box64 logs show warnings like `[BOX64] Warning: DynaRec is available...`.

#### **5. Ecosystem Integration**
- **Android Support:** Run Box64 on Android via shells like **Winlator**.
- **Network Accelerators:** Optimize network calls for online games. Tests on *Factorio Dedicated Server* with Raspberry Pi 5 show latency due to emulated network stacks.
- **Steam Integration:** Auto-configure Proton to run Steam games on ARM devices. Steam is currently unsupported on RISC-V due to binary format limitations.

---

### Implementation Examples from Search Results:
- **On RISC-V:** Compiling Box64 with Box32 requires manually enabling CMake flags `RV64` and `RV64_DYNAREC`.
- **On Raspberry Pi:** Using `-DRPI5ARM64=1` for devices with 16K pagesize improves OS compatibility.
- **systemd-binfmt Integration:** Auto-launch x86_64 programs via Box64 after restarting the `systemd-binfmt` service.

---
### Elaboration of Tools and Improvements for Box64

---

#### **1. Performance Optimization**
1. **Dynamic JIT Optimization (DynaRec):**
   - **Cache Implementation:** Add an LRU cache to store recompiled code blocks. Example:
     ```c
     // Pseudocode for block caching
     struct JITBlockCache {
         uint64_t hash;
         void *compiled_code;
     } cache[MAX_CACHE_SIZE];
     ```
   - **Hot Path Optimization:** Use profiling to identify frequently executed blocks (e.g., loops) and prioritize their caching.

2. **Multithreaded Translation:**
   - Split code into independent segments (e.g., functions) and distribute them across threads.
   - Use a thread pool (e.g., `libdispatch` on Linux):
     ```bash
     # Example compilation with OpenMP support
     cmake .. -DUSE_OPENMP=ON -DNUM_THREADS=4
     ```

3. **Vulkan/DXVK Integration:**
   - Add support for Vulkan extensions (e.g., `VK_KHR_buffer_device_address` for Raspberry Pi):
     ```bash
     # Enable experimental DXVK extensions
     export DXVK_FILTER_EXTENSIONS="VK_KHR_buffer_device_address"
     ```

---

#### **2. Compatibility Expansion**
1. **Automated Wine Configuration:**
   - Script to download and configure Wine:
     ```bash
     #!/bin/bash
     WINE_VERSION="wine-10.0-amd64-wow64"
     wget https://dl.winehq.org/$WINE_VERSION.tar.xz
     tar -xf $WINE_VERSION.tar.xz -C ~/.wine
     ln -s ~/.wine/$WINE_VERSION/bin/wine /usr/local/bin/box64-wine
     ```

2. **Docker Container Support:**
   - Integrate with Podman via `binfmt_misc`:
     ```bash
     # Register Box64 as an x86_64 binary handler
     echo ':x86_64:M::\x7fELF\x02\x01\x01\x00\x00\x00:/usr/bin/box64:' > /proc/sys/fs/binfmt_misc/register
     ```

3. **Proxy System Libraries:**
   - Automatically replace x86_64 libraries via `LD_PRELOAD`:
     ```bash
     # Script to substitute OpenAL
     export LD_PRELOAD="/usr/lib/arm-linux-gnueabihf/libopenal.so.1"
     ```

---

#### **3. Usability Enhancements**
1. **Graphical User Interface (GUI):**
   - GTK3-based example for game selection:
     ```python
     import gi
     gi.require_version('Gtk', '3.0')
     from gi.repository import Gtk
     class GameLauncher(Gtk.Window):
         def __init__(self):
             super().__init__(title="Box64 Launcher")
             self.set_default_size(400, 300)
             # Add game buttons
     ```

2. **Dependency Automation:**
   - `box64-setup` script for DXVK installation:
     ```bash
     winetricks d3dcompiler_47 d3dx11_43 dxvk
     ```

3. **Preconfigured Game Profiles:**
   - Configuration for *Half-Life 2*:
     ```ini
     [hl2]
     resolution=1280x720
     dxvk_version=1.10.3
     env_vars=LD_PRELOAD=libSDL2-2.0.so.0
     ```

---

#### **4. Security and Stability**
1. **Sandbox Mode:**
   - Run via Firejail:
     ```bash
     firejail --private --net=none box64 ./game.exe
     ```

2. **Enhanced Logging:**
   - Enable system call tracing:
     ```bash
     export BOX64_LOG=1
     export BOX64_TRACE_SYSCALL=1
     ```

---

#### **5. Ecosystem Integration**
1. **Android Support:**
   - Build Box64 with Android NDK:
     ```bash
     ndk-build APP_ABI=arm64-v8a BOX64_ANDROID=1
     ```

2. **Network Accelerators:**
   - Intercept socket calls via `LD_PRELOAD`:
     ```c
     // Example optimized connect()
     int connect(int sockfd, const struct sockaddr *addr, socklen_t addrlen) {
         // Optimize UDP packets
     }
     ```

3. **Steam Integration:**
   - Launch Steam via Proton:
     ```bash
     BOX64_EMULATED_PROTON=1 box64 steam
     ```

---

#### **Implementation Examples**
1. **For RISC-V:**
   ```bash
   cmake .. -DRV64=1 -DRV64_DYNAREC=ON
   make -j$(nproc)
   ```

2. **For Raspberry Pi 5:**
   ```bash
   cmake .. -DRPI5ARM64=1 -DPAGESIZE_16K=ON
   ```

3. **Autostart via binfmt:**
   ```bash
   systemctl restart systemd-binfmt
   ```

---
These enhancements will position Box64 as a universal tool for running x86_64 applications on ARM/RISC-V devices, combining performance, usability, and security.

factorio server hangs with dynarec enabled on oracle linux
was trying to test out running factorio on an arm server i had and discovered that it wouldn't work if i compiled with dynarec enabled (i did have to change the page size from 4kb to 64kb as that is what the provided oracle linux image is compiled with? although im not so sure that increase the page size would have any bearing on whether or not it would work, due to 16k pages being supported)

this seems to only happen on oracle linux as i went out and tried both ubuntu on the same provider (oraclecloud) and suse linux on aws and it worked as expected

Box64 - Unable to Login To Steam (Odin 2)
Hello

After building Box64 with the Box32 options, I was able to get Steam "running" on the Odin 2. Unfortunately, now I've run into an issue where the client will not allow me to sign in. Either it will not recognize that the steam app has authorized a login, or it will show a "busy" icon after pressing "sign in" and will stay that way if attempted manually. For the record, I wasn't able to find options for building for Snapdragon 8 Gen 2, so I attempted it with SD888 in the build options and got this far. After checking vulkaninfo, Vulkan is shown as being version 1.3.285, although I don't know if Vulkan plays any part in this. I recently attempted this again, but with the same results. Again, any help would be greatly appreciated.

Android compilation
Hello, sorry. I'm currently looking through the docs and haven't found how to manually compile a box64 for Android.
Maybe I haven't found it yet, so I'd like to ask you. If I were to compile, on this side, I'm using the cross-compilation toolchain on the virtual machine Ubuntu. Could you recommend which toolchain I should use for the compilation? Thank you! Because I also want to do the compilation manually and enjoy the process.

Does Box64 require me to have both arm64 and x64 libraries with the same abi?
Hello,

I could not find any information on this . I will be testing some scientific programs using box64. I have a rhel/centOS rootfs i can use that I can point to. My question is, would I also need the arm equivalent as well? So would I need to run this on a arm64 based redhat system ? I ask because the program of Interest are closed source and only work on rhel version of common libraries.

Remove `rb_get_end` lookup in `allocProtection`
I made a local [commit](https://github.com/devarajabc/box64/commit/1b00139bbf932ae958f8b8ac52e4da435bd0c696) and it passes my tests ( CI and ansibenchmark), saving one **O(log n)** tree lookup on every call.

However, I'm not sure if I missed anything, especially since the original comment says:
> **block is here or absent, no half-block handled..**
> **don't need to add precise tracking probably**

I'm unclear on what it refers to.

From my understand:

`allocProtection()` is responsible for inserting new memory mappings into `mapallmem`, mirroring what’s in `/proc/self/maps` (via `loadProtectionFromMap()`).

Currently, before inserting a new allocation, `rb_get_end` checks whether the memory range already exists. However, this introduces several issues:

1. Partial-range bug

    If addr lies inside an existing node but the new mapping extends past its end, `rb_get_end` returns true and skips the insertion—losing the “tail” of the new range.

2. High-memory reservations

    `reserveHighMem()` is called only once at startup to reserve a region above user-space .
Since that reserved range never expands, we might skip all `allocProtection` calls for addresses within it.

3. Tree insert semantics

     `rb_set()` skips duplicates, so the preliminary lookup might be save.

```diff
void allocProtection(uintptr_t addr, size_t size, uint32_t prot)
{
+   uintptr_t Reseved_addr = box64_is32bits?(1ULL<<32):(1ULL<<47);
+   if (addr >= Reseved_addr)
+      return;
   dynarec_log(LOG_DEBUG, "allocProtection %p:%p 0x%x\n", (void*)addr, (void*)(addr+size-1), prot);
   size = ALIGN(size);
   addr &= ~(box64_pagesize-1);
    LOCK_PROT();
-   uint32_t val;
-   uintptr_t endb;
-   int there = rb_get_end(mapallmem, addr, &val, &endb);
    // block is here or absent, no half-block handled..
-  if(!there)
        rb_set(mapallmem, addr, addr+size, MEM_ALLOCATED);
    UNLOCK_PROT();
    // don't need to add precise tracking probably
}
```

https://github.com/user-attachments/assets/94cba5cb-dbda-427a-96e7-467ae3424ab7

This game is supposed to be strictly first-person for those who don't know.

The dynarec works just fine though so I'd say this is a relatively low priority issue 🙂
Might hint towards some kind of floating point issue in the interpreter though.

Infinite Log Loop and Segfault Wrapping libfontconfig.so.1
I'm trying to run `box64 wine control` on RISC-V [Voyager](https://www.andestech.com/en/2024/05/30/andes-technology-announced-the-qilai-soc-and/) using the same configuration as in issue #2645.

When I execute:
```
BOX64_DYNAREC_RV64NOEXT=1 box64 wine64 control
```
I encounter this error while wrapping `libfontconfig.so.1` ([log_box64_wine_control.log](https://github.com/user-attachments/files/20297667/log_box64_wine_control.log)):
```
[BOX64] Dynarec for rv64g
```
This triggers an infinite logging loop that can’t be stopped, even with Ctrl+C ( see: [video](https://drive.google.com/file/d/1fyB21t1Me-H1Y45fbMwUVyPEjBVy3ghZ/view?usp=sharing)) .I then tried:
```
export BOX64_EMULATED_LIBS=libfontconfig.so.1
```
but it still crashes with a segmentation fault in `AddPath`, because collection is `0x20` (and thus invalid):
```gdb
Program received signal SIGSEGV, Segmentation fault.
AddPath (path=path@entry=0x3fffffe0a0 "libfontconfig.so.1",
    collection=collection@entry=0x20, folder=folder@entry=0)
91	        if(collection->size==collection->cap) {
(gdb) print *collection
Cannot access memory at address 0x20
```

Finally, I tried disabling Dynarec completely (`BOX64_DYNAREC=0`) but it still triggers the same infinite-loop

Segmentation fault in my_XVaCreateNestedList
I have a (perhaps rather ambitious) goal of running Intel Quartus Prime on Apple M1 Pro using Box64. I started by adding the necessary native function wrappings in libc, libfontconfig, and libX11 for running the Quartus programmer installation wizard. The wizard starts, but after a couple of steps it segfaults in `my_XVaCreateNestedList`:

> 4597|SIGSEGV @0x64a5d7c0 (my_XVaCreateNestedList (/usr/local/bin/box64)) (x64pc=0xd0f33/???:"???", rsp=0xffffa028a698, stack=0xffff9fa97000:0xffffa0297000 own=(nil) fp=(nil)), for accessing (nil) (code=1/prot=0), db=(nil)((nil):(nil)/(nil):(nil)/???:clean, hash:0/0) handler=(nil)

Segmentation fault (core dumped)

The wrapped functions I added to libX11 are not called before the segmentation fault, so they can't be the problem. Any pointers on how to start debugging this?

I am running Ubuntu 21.10 on VMware Fusion for Apple Silicon, and I compiled Box64 using `-DARM_DYNAREC=ON`:

> Dynarec for ARM64, with extension: ASIMD AES CRC32 PMULL ATOMICS PageSize:4096

> Box64 with Dynarec v0.1.7 ead3217 built on Apr  4 2022 19:33:09

Should I try using `-DM1=1` instead?

Black squares on window in VaraHF
Hi,

i am using an Orange Pi Zero 2W with OrangeOS (based on arch). I am using the latest VaraHF via Wine from aur package wine-tkg-staging-wow64-bin.

With the aur packge box64 0.3.4-2 it worked ok (but i could not use winetricks due to an error); so i switched to box-git (installed 30min ago). With that winetricks is working well, but I get black areas on my window. See attachment.

As the version change of box64 made this happen, I chose to put the issue here. Any idea?

Function parameters of type XID in libX11
I noticed that most functions in libX11 with a parameter of type `XID` list it as `p` in their signature, but `XSaveContext` lists it as `u`. `XID` is defined as `unsigned long` in *wrapped/wrappedlibx11.c*. Should the `XID` type be `L`, or is `p` correct? I assume `u`is wrong in any case.

Kodi fails to launch under Box64
Preamble: first, why on Earth would anyone want to run x86_64 Kodi on an aarch64 box? Well, quite simply: DRM. On x86_64 linux, the ChromeOS Widevine has support for (or rather allows) playing streams with something called "Verified Media Path". This is a layer of protection currently applied by various (legal) TV streaming services. Items provided by these streaming services using this protection just fail to play back with the aarch64 widevine library, but doing the exact same thing on x86_64 Linux; they play back fine.
So I'm not trying to access anything that I cannot otherwise legally access, if my HTPC had a different architecture.
So yes, the easy way out is to buy an x86_64 mini-ITX motherboard and just use that. But where is the fun in that?

So I went on a little adventure to try and get x86_64 Kodi running on my aarch64 media box (a NanoPi M4). Since the bulk of work in Kodi is hopefully done by the video decoding hardware and the GPU, I'm hoping to get acceptable performance and the ability to play the streams that won't play on aarch64.

So I set up an x86_64 Archlinux sysroot with Kodi and with qemu-user I can chroot into it to maintain it (for some reason Box64 doesn't get used when chrooting cross-architecture, but that's not the current issue). I recompiled mesa to include the panfrost driver and compiled ffmpeg to include the hardware video decoding bits for my RK3399. Starting the x86_64 kodi using qemu-user I can get it to start, but it fails to find a display and audio devices, so I think it's hitting some qemu-specific emulation barrier.

Next step: I built and installed box64 v0.3.4. Setting BOX64_LD_LIBRARY_PATH to the x86_64 sysroot's lib directory, I get the output of [`box64.txt`](https://github.com/user-attachments/files/20432564/box64.txt). Setting BOX64_PREFER_EMULATED=1 and rerunning Kodi, I get the output in [`box64_prefer_emulated.txt`](https://github.com/user-attachments/files/20432565/box64_prefer_emulated.txt). This seems like it succeeds loading more libraries, but ultimately fails to get far enough to start the application.

I understand running a somewhat complex application (including Python, Samba, FFmpeg and whatnot), but it seems I'm hitting some Box64 limitations loading some of these and I wonder what can be done to improve the situation (and perhaps eventually run Kodi).

Running Unity with embedded browser
Hello,

I am trying to run Unity Linux Build with mono in box64 on Raspberry Pi 5. So far for all the previous Unity programs I've emulated it worked as expected.
For the last few days I have been trying to integrate an [embedded browser plugin](https://assetstore.unity.com/packages/tools/gui/embedded-browser-55459) in Unity, but box64 crashes on start. I cannot switch to IL2CPP as the plugin does not support it. I am running the emulator with flags MESA_GL_VERSION_OVERRIDE=3.2 and BOX64_DYNAREC_STRONGMEM=1, which in other cases did the trick.

My error log is:

Failure to create a lib for libprotobuf
When loading a program, I came across the following error:

> Trying to add "libprotobuf.so.14" to maplib

> Trying to load "libprotobuf.so.14"

> Simplified name is "libprotobuf.so.14"

> Faillure to create lib => fail

> Error loading needed lib libprotobuf.so.14

> Error loading one of needed lib

What are the possible reasons for Box64 failing to use an emulated library?
